A Glimpse of Beauty in the Darkness

Imagine you are in a desert and have been there for days without water. You begin to lose hope. Your mind is conceding to the negative thoughts that are bombarding you – when in the distance, you see a body of water. Your heart races. The negative thoughts are replaced with ones of anticipation.

Water never looked so good, and you imagine all the great images you can conjure up about refreshing water: The taste of it going down as you take a drink, the refreshing feel of it on your body when you shower, the fun you experienced when you would play in it. Water was never so beautiful as it is this very moment, during your trial in the desert.

This is how Jesus looks when we are in our deepest and darkest moments. He is never more beautiful. When we lose all hope and give in to despair, there, in the distance, we see Jesus with a smile on His face, compassion in His eyes. His arms stretched out toward us. We see His magnificent power and glory and as we move forward toward Him, the darkness gets left behind. We rejoice once again in our savior.

17 Though the fig tree does not bud
and there are no grapes on the vines,
though the olive crop fails
and the fields produce no food,
though there are no sheep in the pen
and no cattle in the stalls,
18 yet I will rejoice in the Lord,
I will be joyful in God my Savior.
