As a Man Believes

The saying goes, “As a man thinketh, so goes he.”

I contend that we can think all we want to never end up going in that direction. Take procrastination as an example. We think we want to go in a certain way, but never end up there. Thinking takes the energy of the mind. Believing, on the other hand, takes from the mind but also the heart, body, and soul.

That is why, in John 3:16 God says, ‘Those who believe in his Sons’ death will be saved. Not those who think about it.” Going from thinking to believing is a gap as small as that hair on your head to as wide as the Grand Canyon. In either case, it takes an action of the will to cross over. You can’t think your way over. You must actively surrender your emotions, your fears, your desires and die to yourself.

Oswald Chambers in his book My Utmost for His Highest says, “Either you live and God dies within you or God lives and you die.”

Going from thinking to believing takes more focused thought and emotion. You will find an internal anxiousness within your soul. This happens not just in spiritual realms but anytime you chose to believe something that contradicts your way of being.

Should a person sincerely want to change their life, it will take much more than positive thinking or self-talk.

In Romans you see where Abraham became fully convinced. He went from thinking to believing in the fact that God keeps his promises.

Romans 4:21

21 being fully persuaded that God had power to do what he had promised.

How did he do this?

Romans 4:20

20 Yet he did not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened in his faith and gave glory to God,

He grew into it. His faith grew by experiencing God and seeing His promises fulfilled to a point where he could say, “Enough already, I believe you will keep your promises from here on out.”

We too just don’t jump into a belief. We must test the water, research its merits before we take the leap. But there is no way around the fact that there will be a point where we surrender and choose to believe. That time frame is different for everyone, but the results are the same.

So, when we look at our life, past, present, and future, rather than assess our thinking, it is better to take inventory of our beliefs.

As a man believes so goes, he.
