“And this is life eternal, that they might know thee, the only true God and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.” – The Pursuit of God, AW Tozer
If you have been married for 50 years, do you know everything about your spouse? Have you stopped trying to get to know them better? Has your curiosity or a sincere interest been satisfied? Could this be the root of boredom or lack of intimacy in the relationship? Does this hold true for a parent towards their child or between two best friends? Do we have internal limits where we decide we are done learning more about the other person?
I would guess unless the other person caught us by their surprise action or response, that we are good for now with what we know of them. By doing this, we have put them in a box never to come out. Yet, we have seen when a relationship falls apart and a new relationship forms with another person, we observe new dimensions expressing themselves. The best we can say is, “Wow, I didn’t know that he or she could do that or was even interested in that!” Is it possible that we have done the same with God?
Have we hit our limit of knowing Him? Have we stopped trying to know Him? Unless God does something to surprise us, have we become bored with God?
I see how this can easily happen. When we seek God to meet our needs, we can set a limit on how we experience God. Yet, on the other hand, if we seek to join God in His ways, then we will be taken on a limitless adventure. It is impossible for us to imagine what all the possibilities are?
Life would be exciting, and we would awake with great anticipation toward the day ahead. This has nothing to do with our current trials or pains or sufferings. For they will always be there or, if removed, only to be replaced with new ones. No, this is about seeking God beyond our needs and wants to find out more about His.
The funny thing is God says, “If you seek after me, not only will you find me but while you are pursuing me, I will take those things that you are struggling with from you.” If we seek to know more about our spouse, friend or child we will grow deeper in our love for them. When we seek to know God more each and every day, He will amaze us, and our hearts will grow bigger.
Jeremiah 29:12 –13
12 Then you will call on me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
