I Can’t Get No Satisfaction

“There are some advantages to being God. By nature, I am completely unlimited, without bounds. I have always known fullness. I live in a state of perpetual satisfaction as my normal state of existence.” – The Shack, William Young

Have you ever been satisfied? Defined as “the contentment one feels when one has fulfilled a desire, need, or expectation”. If you have, how long did you stay there? Seconds, minutes, days? Can you remember what that felt like? Would you describe it as being done, finished, complete, happy, content, peaceful, fulfilled? There is that feeling that you no longer have any need to pursue reaching that goal, resolving that issue, reconciling that relationship, or finishing that project. You are done.

Some may say that being satisfied means a person lacks motivation, initiative, a striving for more or better. How do you look at a person who claims they are satisfied right where they are at? I imagine that you subconsciously begin to judge, assessing their sense of completion against yours. Take, for example, someone says that they are satisfied turning in what you would consider a “C” level work. You can tell they sincerely are content, and you see no angst in them. What is going through your mind at that moment? Might you be questioning that person by saying to yourself, “What gives them the right to turn this assignment in like this and feel it’s okay? There is so much more that could or should have been done.” Or, I would never do that. Doesn’t he or she take any pride in their work?

If you were perpetually satisfied, does that sound peaceful or boring?

I would propose that it’s a desired but uncomfortable feeling. I think that deep down, we all want to reach that final button to hit at the finish line and say we are done. Yet, we keep hearing a whisper that says you’re still not good enough. How dare you turn in this or that as a final assessment of your life!

I think there is another side of satisfaction that we have not seen this side of heaven.

I believe that satisfaction would be what it would feel like to truly stop and smell those roses forever. And going from rose to rose, sunset to sunrise, not wanting more but enjoying wherever you are at. No hurry, no competition, no comparison, no judgment, no hoarding, no sense of lacking, just being present to the moment and each moment thereafter.

Try today to find satisfaction in something, then stay there as long as you can, taking in everything about that moment and registering it deep inside your mind and soul. My guess is, you will find a smile on your face, but that it won’t be long before you are convinced you must keep moving.

Ecclesiastes 2:24

24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God,
