Have you ever tried to stop moving forward? Is it even possible? In business the saying goes that you’re either moving forward or moving backward — there is no middle ground. Or, as the other saying goes, “Stop and think about it!”
But can we stop? I would argue we cannot stop. The mere fact that time doesn’t stop or go in reverse leaves me to believe we are always moving forward. This is a fact beyond our control.
If that’s true, what does that mean? If moving forward is inevitable, then each second that passes is a new second to be experienced in a new way.
“It is not so much adverse events that make you anxious as it is your thoughts about those events. Your mind engages in efforts to take control of a situation, to bring about the result you desire. Your thoughts close in on the problem like ravenous wolves. Determined to make things go your way, you forget that I am in charge of your life. The only remedy is to switch your focus from the problem to my presence.
“When things don’t go as you would like, accept the situation immediately. If you indulge in feelings of regret, they can easily spill over the line into resentment.”
Sarah Young’s Jesus Calling: Enjoying Peace in His Presence
As Sarah Young says, each new moment gives you the ability to change what happened the moment prior. If we accept each moment in the moment — as just a moment, without adding anything to it — it’s not the circumstance, it’s the thought about the circumstance that causes our reaction and we can experience something new.
If God says He is with us and will guide us, then we must believe that this is true in every moment.
At any moment in time we can change the direction of our thoughts, never looking back at the prior moment in regret, for that moment is gone, but looking forward, striving to keep our focus on our Lord and savior, Jesus.
“The ultimate challenge is to keep fixing your eyes on me, no matter what is going on around you. When I am central in your thinking, you are able to view circumstances from my perspective.”
