To Serve or Not to Serve?

Luke 10:38:

Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord’s feet and listened to his teaching. But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.

So how could this have played out if Martha would have also sat at Jesus’ feet?

Martha had a wonderful caring heart. She wanted to be a good host and serve Jesus. She thought serving Him is what He wanted or needed.

I think if Martha would have seen that to serve a guest, it is about spending time with them. If guests had a choice when visiting to have the person running around serving but having no time to visit and be fully present, I would say they would choose for the person to stop and sit and talk.

I think the day would have been Mary and Martha sitting at Jesus’ feet fully attentive, engrossed as to what He was saying. Interactive and engaged. This would be the best way to serve Him and show Him respect.

Then I also think when the time came for Jesus to stop talking, He would have joined in and helped do whatever was needed to do around the house. Jesus is good, so He naturally serves. In fact, He was the originator of servant hood.

We show the most respect to another person when we show them, we are seeing them and hearing them.

Studies have shown that 95% of people say they don’t feel sincerely heard by others. I guess everyone is like Martha?
