Jesus says to live fully in the present, depending on Him each moment. What’s so special about a moment? As I begin to slow down my mind to capture a single moment, I must admit I have asked myself this very question. There is even a sense of boredom as I tell myself that staying in the moment takes away all my anticipation, planning, vision, and eagerness.
My mind had been racing with thoughts about what I’m going to be doing later today, tomorrow, and in the distant future. When these thoughts are good, creative, and hopeful, I want to be there rather than in the current moment. Think about when you were planning a vacation, starting a new job in a few days, designing your wedding day, or awaiting your child to be born. Those future days are filled with excitement.
However, we all have experienced just the opposite. Days ahead that are going to be filled with grief, suffering, sorrow. A pending divorce, an ongoing physical pain that gets worse by the day, a job layoff, or financial ruin. There is nothing more we desire than for those days to never come.
Yet, in both future good or bad situations, if we were to train our mind to slow down to the very nanosecond of the current moment, we will see something that transcends the future and overshadows the past. We will be conscious of the very breath we breathe, the minute intricacies of every part of our body, the smell in the air, that tingly feeling of a touch, the colors around us, the chirping of the birds, the arms of God wrapped around us, a peace that can’t be described, and humility that brings a smile, a confidence in a powerful God, strength and courage that exceeds our own physical abilities, love at its deepest level, wisdom that only Solomon could boast of, and the fruits of the spirit, hope, patience, and joy. We can experience each one of these things in every moment, at any time, in any place. There are no restrictions or rules. No price, position, or performance that is required. It’s available to all people everywhere.
The scripture says, ‘Be still and know that He is God.’
A moment. What’s so special? The answer is everything.
Take a moment and experience it for yourself.
